5T Hoghton Tower visit.

The visit supported our work on the Tudors as the house was built during the reign of Elizabeth I. It is supposed to be the third most haunted house in England.

The children dressed up as either a knight or a princess and we had a tour of the house. The huge fireplaces, wooden four-poster beds and stories of straw filled mattresses and mouse fur eyebrows captured the children’s imaginations, never mind a visit to the dungeon!

Publishing our work.

We have been writing an explanation guide about how to survive on a deserted island. We started by looking at the features of an explanation, then the sentence structure and finally took some notes from survival experts.

These notes were then used to create our guides. Following some  self and peer assessment we were finally ready to publish our work. We had the choice of whether to use Google docs or to hand write it - most of us chose to use a Chromebook!

We still have some work to do yet, further editing and selecting the appropriate font and size for our guides.

5T visit to Catalyst

We had an amazing time, being scientists in a real science lab.

We made a medicine to stop heartburn, this is caused by stomach acid getting somewhere where it shouldn’t. We had to check the pH of our medicine and make sure we didn’t make it too alkaline as that would be just as nasty. The medicine needed to be neutral, a purple colour.

After lunch we went to the hands on science area. It was great fun.

Science - separating materials

Through our topic - Alchemy Island - we have been exploring materials, mixing them and then separating them. Here are two ways we did it - evaporation and filtering.

Fractions and decimals

We enjoy doing maths activities, this one is about matching fractions and decimals.
